Issei Sagawa is a Japanese man who, while studying in Paris, murdered and cannibalized a woman named Renée Hartevelt. He invited her over for dinner, shot her, had sex with her corpse, and then carried out his plan to cannibalize her body.
For the next two days, Sagawa ate parts of the body, starting with her butt and thighs. He then attempted to dump the mutilated corpse in a lake, but was seen and arrested by French police. Sagawa said he chose Hartevelt for her health and beauty, claiming that he wanted to “absorb her energy”.
Found to be legally insane, Sagawa was committed to a mental hospital in France. He was later extradited to Japan, but due to complications with his record he was deemed sane and able to check himself out of the mental hospital. He was only in the hospital for a year.
Sagawa now lives in Tokyo and is a minor celebrity in Japan. In an interview with Vice magazine in 2009, he expressed suicidal thoughts and said that being forced to make a living while being known as a murderer and cannibal was a terrible punishment.
